Reindeer herding in InariInari is the biggest and second northernmost municipality in Finland. It has 7300 inhabitants, of whom more than 600 own reindeer. The area of the municipality, 17 321 km², is divided to eight Reindeer herding co-operatives. Altogether they had a total of 38 000 reindeer in the herding year 2001-2002. A reindeer herding co-operative is an association of reindeer owners within a given geographic area. The status of the co-operative is defined by law and its territory is enforced by the provincial government. In 2002, the herding co-operatives of Inari formed an alliance for PR and co-ordinating purposes. The herding co-operatives of Ivalo, Muddusjärvi, Muotkatunturi, Näätämö, Paatsjoki and Vätsäri all nominated a representative to this common body. During a trial period, some reindeer owners of the Hammastunturi and Sallivaara co-operatives also took part in the co-operation. Since the end of the trial time the Ivalo co-operative has resigned the group. The other co-operatives continue working together according to need. Until now most of the work of the alliance has focused on issues related to the impacts of state forestry on reindeer herding. The aim of the alliance is to create a website to distribute information on reindeer herding and to work as a communication channel between reindeer herding communities and the general public.
